PhD in Multimedia in Education by the University of Aveiro (2015), Master’s degree in Geographic Information Systems, from the Higher Technical Institute (IST) in Lisbon (2005) and Degree in Geography, specialization in Teaching, from the University of Coimbra (2000). Vânia Carlos is a researcher at the Research Center on Didactics and Technology for the Training of Educators (CIDTFF), at the Department of Education and Psychology of the University of Aveiro, Portugal, with a research plan entitled “Smart Educational Communities: geographic citizen science networks connecting smart open cities and schools in the Aveiro region”, since January 2019. She was previously a postdoctoral researcher funded by FCT ("Technology-enhanced places as new learning environments outside the classroom: smart open cities and schools learning collaboratively") and for an Erasmus+ research project (“ENAbLE - Educational Advancement of ICT-based spatial Literacy in Europe”). Besides her academic experience as a researcher in Education, she has also professional significant expertise in GIS consultancy (esri Portugal) and in urban/regional spatial planning (Ventura da Cruz, Planeamento), working directly to several Local Governments. Her major research interests are related to smart cities and the development of smart educational communities, ICT-based spatial literacy, context-aware learning, geographical citizen science, volunteered geographic information, crowdmapping and educational data mining and teacher training.

Working Groups
WG2: Develop synergies with education
This group will focus on the learning outcomes of CS projects. The objective of this WG is to increase awareness about the possibilities of CS in education, by collating the knowledge of current practices and underscoring the meaning of CS in formal and informal education.
WG3: Improve society-science-policy interface
The working group will focus on the outcomes of CS projects for policy makers at local, national, and European level concerned with policies impacting the environment and society. The objective of this WG is to make government officials and decision makers aware of CS by providing evidence and guidance material, so that they can use it as part of policy formation, implementation and evaluation.
